Molly Jae Vaughan :: Artist Talk
Molly Vaughan’s multimodal art production is centered around her transsexual body, trans histories, resistance to oppression, state sponsored/criminal surveillance/violence against 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and community-based activism. In her work Vaughan engages in a range of processes that actualize her interests in mark, movement, anatomy, cartography, memorialization, and mythology. As a trans pansexual artist, Vaughan’s life and her success as an artist/educator are intertwined with the reality of her politicized body and sexuality. Like all artists she has fought hard to get visibility for her work over the years; yet, in our current political climate she is losing access to institutions because of laws designed to make trans/queer identities invisible in public life. During her talk Vaughan share tactics, she has successfully navigated around institutional concerns of “Don’t Say Gay” style laws and bills. As a public and visible trans artist, conversations centered on methods for her safety in anti-trans/queer locations have become normalized as she attempts to keep her work in the public eye while experiencing censorship.
Vaughan will share work from three major bodies of work: Her Body, After Boucher, and Project 42.
TW: Violence, Surgical documentation, and Intersectional Oppression including racism will be discussed.
Attendees are requested to wear masks.
